Money < Leadership & Culture

One week after Ohio State University claimed the national championship, Ohio State Athletics Director Ross Bjork made a compelling statement:

“You can have all the money, all the collectives you can have, but if you don’t have a foundation of leadership, culture, and chemistry, then it’s not going to matter.”

In today’s college athletics landscape, NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness) collectives are spending millions to recruit and retain top talent. Ohio State, like other top programs, leveraged NIL deals to secure elite athletes. However, can money alone guarantee success?

While NIL played a role in Ohio State’s championship run, simply attracting talented players with lucrative deals isn’t enough. Once those players join a team, the real challenge begins—building a cohesive unit with a shared purpose. As Bjork highlights, leadership and culture ultimately determine whether a collection of great athletes can transform into a championship team.

The Blueprint for Building a Championship Team

The most successful teams, including Ohio State, focus on these core strategies to cultivate strong leadership and culture:

1. Define a Clear and Inspiring Goal

  • Establish a **specific, measurable objective** that unites the team.
  • Connect the goal to a larger purpose, ensuring every athlete understands their role.

2. Establish Core Values and a Shared Identity

  • Define key values that guide behavior and decision-making.
  • Create team rituals (meetings, celebrations, traditions) to reinforce unity.
  • Develop a team mantra that symbolizes commitment to the goal.

3. Foster Strong Communication and Trust

  • Encourage open and honest conversations where every voice is heard.
  • Promote accountability, ensuring each member takes responsibility for their contributions.

4. Build a Supportive Team Culture

  • Recognize and celebrate small wins to maintain motivation.
  • Address conflicts early, reinforcing a team-first mentality.

5. Align Roles and Responsibilities

  •  Ensure each team member understands their role and impact on the team’s success.
  • Balance individual strengths with team needs, assigning responsibilities strategically.

Beyond Money: The Key to Sustained Success

NIL funding can attract elite talent, but leadership, culture, and chemistry create champions. Programs that prioritize these principles—alongside financial resources—consistently achieve the highest levels of success.
